This is the first edition of the Snapshots project, a series of four 7-inch singles with new solo music by saxophonist Ken Vandermark, which will be released on Kilogram Records in 2021 and the first half of 2022.
Each 45 will contain several tracks, and the recordings are scheduled to be released at three-month intervals. Since there is a time constraint, with less than 4 minutes of music on each side of the single, we made a decision inspired by the Quakers Supa K: Heavy Tremors album for Ken to create "micro-improvisations," two on each side, about a minute and a half on each, using each of the 4 instruments Ken plays: tenor & baritone sax, Bb & bass clarinet.
In addition to being a musician, Ken is also a photographer. Traveling around the world while on tour, he "saves" his favorite places in pictures, and the idea was developed to create the Snapshots series around images and inspirations from some of the locations that are most significant to him. Volume one is an homage to Japan, with cover photographs from that country and the 4 pieces dedicated to Japanese artists who have had real impact on Ken's thinking and creative work: Akira Sakata, Masahisa Fukase, Yasujirō Ozu, and Daido Moriyama.
The project will be completed with a CD that combines all the pieces from the singles with bonus recordings that did not fit onto the initial singles, and add to the range of this unique document.
